Dirk Holzfuss says thank you!
2026 is a very special year for us: Rheinfrank & Holzfuss is celebrating 20 years of unswerving passion for antique jewellery, historic engagement rings and exceptional jewellery art. When I walk through our showrooms in Berlin and Munich today, I sometimes find it hard to believe how it all began. Our first retail space was just 12 square metres in size. Small, personal, full of hope – and full of love for unique pieces of jewellery with a true sense of history.
Today, we can safely say that Rheinfrank & Holzfuss is one of the best-known destinations for antique jewellery in Germany and Europe. Thousands of antique pieces spanning over 250 years of history now form part of our collection – from Georgian jewellery and Victorian rings to Art Deco engagement rings and mid 20th-century vintage.
Together with my business partner Oliver Rheinfrank, I have built this journey. Our roles have always been clearly defined: Oliver is responsible for purchasing, I for sales. And to this day, I am fascinated by his incredible instinct for extraordinary, rare and sometimes completely eccentric pieces of jewellery. To be honest, this has also led to regular discussions between us, as Oliver often falls in love with artistic one-offs that, from a commercial point of view, actually seem ‘unsellable’. And, of course, I had to ensure that we remained financially viable as a business.
Yet it is precisely this combination that has defined Rheinfrank & Holzfuss: a passion for beauty, coupled with a sense of responsibility towards our customers and staff.
For every single piece of antique jewellery tells its own story. At some point, every ring, every brooch, every necklace was crafted out of love for someone. Small works of art were created through painstaking craftsmanship, often surviving wars, social upheavals, divorces, loss and new beginnings. And yet, to this day, they carry within them hope, elegance and happiness.
How many engagements, weddings, happy moments or intense emotions might a single piece of jewellery have witnessed? Perhaps we should remind ourselves of this more often. For neither we nor our customers will ever be the last owners of these precious talismans. Antique jewellery is passed on – from generation to generation.
A decisive moment in our development, alongside the opening of our new showroom in 2010, was the opening of Soho House Berlin right next to our shop. Suddenly, international artists, actors, musicians, superstars and their assistants were standing in our shop. To their great surprise, however, even famous personalities had to pay for their jewellery – because I simply didn’t recognise many of them at all.
Our back-office staff would often roll their eyes at this, because they could see exactly who was standing in front of me via the cameras. But for me, that was – and still is – par for the course. Every customer deserves the same respect and the same service – regardless of whether they have a small budget or plenty of resources.
I hasten to add that Bill Kaulitz and Donatella Versace were both the friendliest and most natural of all the personalities to come through our doors. To be honest, some assistants had far more airs and graces than their employers.
When I look back on the past two decades today, I feel above all a sense of gratitude. Gratitude towards our customers in Berlin, Munich, Germany and from all over the world. Gratitude towards our staff, friends, companions and everyone who shares in our passion for historical jewellery.
20 years of Rheinfrank & Holzfuss mean more than just 20 years of antique jewellery. They are two decades full of stories, encounters, emotions and trust.
Thank you to everyone who has accompanied me on this journey, whether briefly or over many years.
Warm regards
Dirk Holzfuss
